Chapter 15
Apollo
I should have stayed away from her. Elyse was nothing but trouble for me. If I acted on what I felt for her, I was going to get my ass kicked right back to Mount Olympus, where Zeus would make me be a god again, complete with the shiny little halo and the wine that everyone sipped so damn self-righteously. I cringed.
No, thank you. I was more of a whiskey man. And I wanted to stay here on Earth, where I had freedom to do as I pleased.
Which meant I was a complete idiot even considering going over to Elyse’s place this morning. Yet still, I climbed on my bike, switched on the engine, and drove toward the magic that drew me. Called to me. Clawed at my insides to hurry.
That was the problem. There was something about Elyse I couldn’t stay away from. She’d been on my mind since I’d first bumped into her, and I’d found myself needing her company. I couldn’t explain the desire burrowing through me. When I was with her, I felt as if I had been underwater my whole life, and I could finally break through the surface and breathe.
If that wasn’t poetic enough for the god of music and poetry, I didn’t know what was.
The whole thing pissed me off—how I felt this way about her—but I couldn’t help myself. And staying away from her only caused me pain. The kind that tore at my chest like a blade-wielding maniac using me as target practice.
As I drove, the sun broke through the clouds.
“I haven’t seen you in a while,” I said to the sunshine, my chest beaming, a smile splitting my mouth. “Many a bright mornings I have seen, but none compared to the brightness in her celestial eyes.”
What a beautiful sky. Everything looked better when it was illuminated by the shafts of gold that fell from the sky. I couldn’t wait to see Elyse.
Except she wasn’t home when I arrived. Good. I could turn around and return to my place. Stop being an ass and live the life I had chosen here on Earth, away from the gods and their bullshit. And falling head over heels for a human, let alone a Lowe, had not been part of the deal. Maybe I ought to leave the city. I’d only just arrived in Chicago from traveling the country, and already I regretted my decision to come here.
I got back onto my bike as Elyse’s car pulled into a parking spot along the street, and she climbed out. My pulse sped at her presence.
She eyed me warily. She wore yoga pants and a matching black top, hair sticking out of her braid, her cheeks blushing red as if she’d been running a marathon, and clothes hanging off her.
“What are you doing here?” She frowned, her eyes avoiding mine as if meeting my gaze made her admit her true feelings.
I didn’t know how to answer that. I longed to be around her, to bask in the warmth I had felt when we shared time together.
